I. SUFE Website Main Structure Construction and Current Status

The construction of SUFE website’s main structure started from April 2000. The first phase of the construction project was completed and passed its acceptance test in December 2000 with a total cost of 4.3 million RMB. There are 760 information nodes on the main branches of the network, which cover all the office premises, teaching buildings, science labs and library. The main branches of the network were laid with 1000M fiber optical cables that are distributed to the various main nodes with an information load of 100M or 10M. SUFE network was connected to Shanxi Network Center of China Network of Educational Science and Research with 10M fiber optical cable. The communication between its South campus and North campus (with a physical distance of about 20km) was realized with 10M microwaves. SUFE network center provides Proxy server, mail server, SUFE web server etc., which offer helpful services for the teaching, science and research work of the university.
The second phase of the project started from December 2002 with a total investment of about 2.9 million RMB and was completed and passed its acceptance test in June 2003. The main construction includes the following contents:

(1) Another 1,794 nodes were added to the network, which cover #7 postgraduate dormitory building; #4, #5, #6, #8 and #9 undergraduate dormitory buildings and the General Logistic Building in the South campus and the postgraduate building in the north campus as well. The 10M-microwave communication between the South campus and the North campus was replaced with 100M fiber optical cable. From June 2002, China domestic HTTP and Socks Internet services were provided to the postgraduate dormitory buildings and some of the undergraduate dormitory buildings.

(2) A contract was signed between SUFE and China Network of Communications (CNC) Taiyuan Branch to provide broadband Internet service by CNC to SUFE teaching and administrative staff’s apartments in its South, North and West campus and about 1,400 information nodes were constructed. This service began to function in October 2003. The cross-communication between the broadband and university network is now being resolved.

SUFE network was connected to Shanxi Network Center of China Network of Educational Science and Research through 10M fiber optical cables in March 2004.
At present, SUFE network covers almost all the office premises, teaching buildings, all the postgraduate dormitories and 60% of undergraduate dormitories. There are about 2,500 computers connected to the university network inside SUFE campuses.

II. The Application of SUFE Network

The application of SUFE network is still under construction and development. Apart from the conventional Internet service, SUFE network also provides, in the Digital Library, about 300 thousands of electronic books and more than 30 types of electronic periodicals and about 150 electronic libraries are opened day and night for all the students and teachers.
In addition, SUFE Journal, CYLC, Alumni Office, Science and Research Net of the S & R Department, Teaching Net of the Teaching Affairs’ Department and MBA net all provide rich contents and excellent services. The individual websites of all schools, colleges and departments offer colorful services too. The computers of the Computer Science Center and all laboratories are all connected to the university network providing net surfing services to all the students.
The following websites are still being constructed: SUFE Electronic Administration (Office system), website for Excellent Lectures, large-size teaching affairs system, students affairs system etc.
